Welcome to Class 6

Autumn term 2008

Dear parents / carers

May I first take the opportunity to congratulate all the children in Class six for the fantastic effort they have put in to returning to school with a positive attitude to learning and proving themselves to be fantastic role models for the rest of the school to look up to.

Over the next term our two themes for our afternoon learning will be “Ourselves” (up till October half term) and “Celebrations around the world” (up till December break). Most subject areas are taught through these themes, however there are distinct sessions for: PE, Spanish, Personal and Social development, times tables, spellings and ………... French!!

I have two sessions a week out of class and these sessions are covered by two extremely experienced teachers.

Monday – Mrs.Harris

Thursday – Miss.Reeves

These teachers have explicit subject areas they cover with the class and we are in constant contact regarding the children’s progress, attainment and behaviour. We continue to enjoy Spanish sessions with Mr.Smee and our  class also benefits from Miss.Reeves expertise through a weekly French session on a Thursday afternoon.

Spelling sets and times tables have already been sent out. It is also expected that every child in class 6 regularly read in and out of school and ALWAYS has a reading book at their reading ability available in school. This book must come into school every day. Your child will also be involved in guided reading, this will occur every two to three weeks.

Some important days to remember:

Monday / Friday

PE

Tuesday

Spelling test

Friday

Times tables test

Friday

Homework set ( to be returned following Thursday)

Thursday

Homework in by this day

I am hoping to introduce “Show and tell” with two children a week within the next half term and this will be on a Tuesday. Your child will come home with a little reminder when it is their turn! Please help your child select an object that they can easily talk and answer questions about.

My main priority as class teacher is ensuring Class six have a successful, aspirational and creative year. This year where I aim for EVERY child to reach their  personal potential. Numeracy groups have already started for some pupils after school to support them in furthering their knowledge and application of Maths and further groups will be set up as the year continues. Groups will be established to support children at all  levels of learning across Numeracy and Literacy. Please watch this space!!

Thank you for all the support you have already shown. I look forward to meeting more of you as time goes on. If you can spare time to help with sewing, reading, display, group or themed work please pop in and see me at the end of the day. I am keen to ensure Stanstead children see how we can learn from everyone around us!

I am generally around school, if not in class at the end of the day and am available to discuss any concerns or celebrations around your child, though sometimes it may be necessary to make a more convenient appointment.

Thank you

Sheila Hayes                             Patricia Vladev
